Plastic materials
Plastics are a broad group of materials made from organic compounds, mainly synthetic polymers. Their popularity results from unique properties such as light weight, corrosion resistance, ease of processing, and low production cost. They are used in nearly every field of life – from the automotive industry to medicine and electronics.
Types of Plastics:
Plastics are divided into several basic groups depending on their properties and applications:
Thermoplastics – Materials that can be repeatedly heated and reshaped. Examples: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They are widely used in the production of packaging, pipes, and toys.
Thermosetting Plastics (Thermosets) – Once formed, they become permanently rigid and cannot be remelted. Examples: epoxy resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins. They are used in electronics, automotive applications, and construction.
Elastomers – Flexible materials that return to their original shape after deformation. Examples: synthetic rubber, silicone. They are used in the production of tires, seals, and hoses.
Polymer Composites – A combination of polymers with other materials, such as glass or carbon fibers, to increase strength. Examples: laminates used in aviation and boat building.
